It’s estimated that the adult human body is made up of somewhere around 100 trillion cells …. 100 000 000 000 000 – a huge number! Every moment of every day these cells are working – processing nutrients that come in, disposing of waste products, and doing whatever else their job is. Below is a beautiful video produced by BioVisions at Harvard University. It shows what happens in just one type of cell, a white blood cell, as it responds to inflammation. If you have a decent speed internet link, then I highly recommend pressing on the HQ button to have youtube give you the High Definition version.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Our cells are amazing pieces of biological machinery. My basic nutrition philosophy is that if we can understand what a cell’s job is, and what nutrients it needs to do that job optimally, then we’re well on the way to understanding our nutrient needs for achieving optimal health. If all our liver cells have what they need to function optimally, then we’ll have an optimally functioning liver. Same for our brain cells, skin cells, even toe nail cells! We’ve a long way to go, but every month and every year brings new understanding of the processes of cellular nutrition.

PS. If you want an indepth explanation of the video, check out this version
